  • 4 O’clock Quizzes- Four o'clock quiz - Scheduled by the Registrar on appropriate dates in the sixth and eleventh weeks of the semester for multiple-section classes where it is desirable to give a uniform hour examination to everyone in the course at the same time.
  • Adjunct Faculty- Part-time faculty members hired on a temporary basis, usually one semester at a time.
  • Alumnus - One who has attended or graduated from a particular school, college or university.  The plural form is alumni.  To refer to a single female graduate, the word alumna is used (plural - alumnae).
  • Assistant Professor -  The first professorial rank for faculty who hold the terminally qualifying (usually doctoral) degree is Assistant Faculty.
  • Associate Professor - Associate faculty are elected to this rank after a period in which they have demonstrated scholarly work and effective teaching that have earned them an acceptable level of national standing in their disciplines or professions.
  • AT - Apprentice Teacher  Juniors and Seniors may apply. For more information contact the Provost's office.
  • Banner -Lehigh's Enterprise-Wide Information System (LEWIS) is Lehigh University’s two-year project to install and implement SCT (Systems & Computer Technology) Corporation’s Banner 2000 software for student records, financial aid, finance, human resources and alumni records.
  • Brown and White - Lehigh University's Student Newspaper published twice a week.
  • Computer Liaison - a departmental staff member nominated to interact directly with their Client Services computing consultant and provide assistance with computer-related issues.
  • Course Info - Web based software tool / instructional package used by Lehigh University in graduate and undergraduate level courses that allow materials to be presented on the web.
  • Credit Union - Lehigh is affiliated with the Bethlehem Teachers Federal Credit Union.  A representative from the Credit Union is available on campus every Wednesday from Noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Human Resources office (http://btcu.org/).
  • Dean - Head of a division, faculty, college or school of the university.
  • Distance education - Opportunity for students to take courses by satellite and streaming video from their work sites and homes.
  • Employment Coordinator – liaison in each major area of Lehigh to assist in the employment process
  • ESL (English as a Second Language) - The ESL Program at Lehigh serves international students and the Lehigh community in a curriculum of academic preparation and support.
  • ERAC (The Employee Relations Advisory Committee) - is a group of Lehigh employees strongly committed to a proactive stance in advising the President, through the Vice President for Finance and Administration, on matters of policy and programs pertaining to employee relations. Areas of primary concern include the following: communication, compensation (salary and benefits), working conditions, staff recognition and development, and problem solving mechanisms.
  • Exempt – Employees who are exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Strictly salary, works hours needed to complete the job.
  • Faculty- The teachers, professors, and instructors who teach at Lehigh.
  • FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) - Federal regulations that set the federal minimum wage rate and require the payment of overtime for certain workers after 40 hours worked per week.
  • Full Professor – The senior faculty position.
  • GA (Graduate Assistant) - Appointed on recommendation of the department chairman, devotes half time to graduate work and is appointed for one year.
  • Gryphon - Undergraduate students selected through a rigorous selection process and trained to meet the needs and demands of students in residence halls.
  • Lecturer- One who delivers lectures professionally.  A member of the faculty of a college or university usually having qualified status without rank or tenure
  • LTS (Library and Technology Services) - Computing and Networking Services; Library Services; Media Services; Telephone Services.
  • LVAIC (Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges) – which includes Cedar Crest, DeSales, Lafayette, Lehigh, Moravian and Muhlenberg.
  • Nonexempt – Employees who fall under the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Receive overtime compensation after 40 hours per week.
  • Ombudsperson- Serves as a neutral, independent and informal conflict resolution resource.  Helps members of the Lehigh community determine what are appropriate courses of action and assess who should be involved and at what stage. (www.lehigh.edu/~inombuds/)

  • Portal – This secure site provides students, faculty and administrative staff with world-class Intranet and Internet services. This site allows Lehigh family to check e-mail, register for courses, and explore the Internet.  Access to the portal is available on  the Lehigh homepage.
  • Professor of Practice – faculty member who teach, but do not do research
  • Provost - High-ranking University administrative officer; the Provost reports to the President and is in charge of academics, faculty, etc. (The current Provost is Dr. Patrick Farrell.)
  • Rules and Procedures of the Faculty of Lehigh University and related information (R&P) - Rules and Procedures of the Faculty 
  • RA (Research Assistant) - Appointed by research project directors in consultation with department chair.  They are candidates for graduate degrees devoting full time to a program of graduate work, which may include teaching, research or other academic activity as well as courses.
  • Spring break - 9 day break in the Spring for students and faculty (5 days - no classes) check registrar's schedule for current calendar
  • Spotlight - Monthly Human Resources publication filled with information for Lehigh employees.
  • Stem- All departments at Lehigh are broken down into five main branches that support the University as a whole. The Stems are as follows:
    • Provost Stem includes all academic departments, Academic Outreach, LTS, Registrar, Research, Student Affairs, Admissions and Financial Aid, and Greek Life.
    • President Stem includes Athletics, Alumni Association, Government Affairs, Community and Regional Affairs, State Relations, Public Relations.
    • Finance and Administration Stem includes all administrative departments
    • Advancement Stem includes Development, Career Services and Corporate and Foundation Relations.
    • University Relations Stem includes Internet Services, University Communications and University Design
  • Syllabus - A summary outline of a course given to students by a professor.  The plural form is syllabi.
  • TA (Teaching Assistant) - Appointed on recommendation of the department chairman, devotes half time to graduate work and is appointed for one year.
  • Tenure - Status granted after a trial period to a teacher protecting them from summary dismissal.
  • Work study - Work study provides on-campus job opportunities for students so they can make money during their free time.
  • Visiting Professor –a professor from another institution who is teaching and/or doing research temporarily at Lehigh.
  • Vita – An account of one's career and qualifications prepared typically by an applicant in academia.  Also known as CV, or curriculum vita, the plural form is vitae. In non-academic environments this is commonly called a resume.
